The beautiful villages, which can be described as one of Japan's original landscapes, were selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976, and in 1995, Shirakawa-go and Gokayama were registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites together with Gokayama.
